Our trip with Joop’s parents began with the long and, eventually, winding road to Tofino. Tofino is a small town about half way up the island on the west coast, whereas we are on the east coast. Tofino and the road that leads to it – or at least the part from where you drive from east to west – were a highlight of last years holiday. The spot where the above photos were taken is right beside that winding road. Breathtaking.
The next day started with a long walk on the beach. It is such a beautiful beach and so very different from the ones here on the east coast. Rugged, sandy, extensive. Staring out over the ocean always gives me a sense of freedom, like I could go anywhere. A long walk on a good beach also makes me feel peaceful like nothing else; when there aren’t many people around and the sound of the ocean is all you hear and you can focus on your steps on the endless beach or navigating over the rocks. It was a bit chilly, still, and a cardigan was needed. Bliss.
That night, after dinner, Joop and I put on an extra layer of clothing, took along a blanket and headed to the beach. The sky was so clear and there were more stars visible than I had ever seen. The milky way stretched out from the horizon, over our heads and into the distance. The moon was hanging low and had us second guessing our sanity when it sank into the ocean – we had never seen that before. It was such a beautiful and memorable evening. I wish I had photos to share of that sky. Maybe someday, when we can transfer images of the mind, because it’s locked up in there. Unforgettable.
We spent the night in the same B&B as last year, just a short walk from the ocean. We were in a room with the fitting name “Birdlover’s Loft”. There was a feeder that hung in front of the window and as our host brought us a plate full of baked goods and fresh fruit, she also filled up the feeder. While we enjoyed our breakfast, so did the birds, fighting over a spot on the feeder. It was a nice way to wake up. Calm and easy.
Before we went on our way that morning, we stopped at long beach, just as it was starting to heat up and the surfers started to come out. I tried to take it all in one last time, while Joop snapped some photos of the beautiful light on the beach, the waves that started to roll in and the surfers that took them on. This one kind of looks like superman. So awesome. Tofino really is something else.
